We will complete a wide variety of experiments using the scientific method process, art activities, and various hands-on activities including the dissection of animals, throughout the course. Students will watch and listen to informative clips, participate in interactive games, and follow along with slideshow presentations.

We will join in on a Carolina Oceans Study field trip. This organization offers many different types of field trips, and the final choice has not been chosen as of yet. We also plan to have guest speakers in the classroom as well as local trips.

Oceanography (Spring Semester) 2nd Period

Cost - $30

Homework- 30min to an hr daily. This one includes reading as well as possibly prepping for an experiment during class. You can also expect a final project due at the end of this semester.

Supplies – Masterbooks: The New Oceans Book (current addition)

The oceans may well be Earth’s final frontier. Did you know.. These dark and sometimes mysterious waters cover 71 percent of the surface area of the globe and have yet to be fully explored. Under the waves, a watery world beyond your imagination awaits. Learning about the oceans and their hidden worlds can be exciting and rewarding — the abundance and diversity of life, the wealth of resources, the latest discoveries, and the simple mysteries that have intrigued explorers and scientists for centuries.

You will notice in the curriculum they have created it with three different levels of education. In our class, we will focus mainly on level three with some added level two. If you have a younger sixth grader that cannot keep up with level three and would still like to join the class, please notify me through email.

Goals

  • Grasp a deeper understanding of the ocean tides, waves, and currents.
  • Explore the vast world of giant squids and other sea “monsters.” (We will not spend a great deal of time on the animals in this text as our main focus was on sea animals last semester.)
  • Discover the impact of weather systems and the Great Flood on Earth’s land and seas.

*Missing more than three assignments you will be removed from class; without a refund.

* I am working on a guest speaker who is a retired Navy Maritime officer as well as a history professor from Campbell University.
